General Decluttering TIPS
1. Look around your house. Begin a list of the items that you no longer use, are disorganized, make things too crowded, or are unfinished. This is where you will start when decluttering.
2. One of the best ways that I have found is using the clutter criteria listed at the beginning of this chapter. If it has not been used, is disorganized, makes things too crowded, or is unfinished, it needs to go. Sometimes, of course, this cannot happen. A disorganized bookshelf may not be able to be moved, but you can organize it and use the criteria to determine if everything on the shelf needs to stay.
3. Even if you only work one or two hours a day, complete whatever process you have begun. If you have started on the kitchen counters, finish that before ending. Do not forget to do something with what you have moved. (See Tip 4.)
4. Find out what organizations in your area pick up items. Such organizations often include Goodwill, The Salvation Army, veteranâs associations, and other local groups. Another good way to get rid of items you no longer need is to use Freecycle. Here, you can list items you no longer need and then choose someone from a list of takers to have them. The best part is the person wanting the items comes to your home on your timetable to get them. You can find a freecycle group in your area by going to www.freecycle.org.
5. Rent a storage unit or borrow a friendâs garage for a few weeks or months and fill it with boxes of collectibles as well as sports equipment, holiday decorations, seasonal clothing, and extra furniture.
